Injustamente ou não, a elaboração de listas de melhores discos do ano é uma actividade normalmente e tipicamente destinada a quem escreve (e ouve) sobre música e não a quem a faz. Mas isso não quer dizer que os músicos não elaborem as suas listas e até as publiquem. Este ano o Bodyspace decidiu convidar alguns dos músicos da nossa e de outras praças para que escolhessem os seus discos favoritos deste ano que agora acaba. Nem todos aceitaram tão dantesca tarefa (muitos confessaram que ouvem mais música de outros anos, outros que a actividade discográfica lhes passa completamente ao lado), mas os que responderam afirmativamente ao repto deitaram mãos à obra e não se fizeram rogados. As listas aparecem de variadas formas e feitos, com texto ou sem texto, mas sempre com boa vontade - estas contribuições podem muito bem ser o espelho daquilo que lhes vai na alma. André Gomes

Bom, antes de mais é a primeira vez que faço uma lista de melhores discos. A primeira ideia que me ocorreu quando me convidaram a fazê-la foi “ mas eu nem devo ter ouvido 30 discos deste ano!”. Mas afinal ouvi até bem mais que isso.
É mesmo complicado gerir a dita cuja, acho que a música não se coaduna com listagens e contagens, ou caso elas tenham mesmo de existir, que sejam os outros a fazê-las… foi assim que sempre pensei, e sempre que possível tento fugir delas…
Fazer a lista fez-me discos refrescar a memória relativamente a discos que tinha ouvido e gostado bastante. Todavia a escolha do primeiro lugar foi a mais fácil…. trata-se do álbum que mais me acompanhou durante o ano e que culminou num belíssimo concerto na Casa da Música.

Circunspecto, luminoso. Mais um pedaço de Berlim levado para férias em tenda à beira rio. Exemplar no balanço possível entre a disciplina criativa e o lirismo.

Clogs Lantern
Mais texturado e agressivo, o folk de câmara dos Clogs revela um afastamento progressivo da plataforma neoclássica. Esplendorosamente musical.

Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou Ethiopiques, Vol. 21: Ethiopia Song
Uma colecção intoxicante e irresistível de temas - desde os 60’ - desta freira-pianista, entre o apelo do jazz, a tentação dos blues, assente na certeza da tradição musical etíope e na forma e técnica clássicas. A gestão do tempo, o fraseamento rítmico e o controle do andamento são os trunfos mais evidentes... com a virtude acrescida de sabermos que vem tudo da alma. Tsegué chamar-lhe-ia vocação, eu chamo-lhe inteligência.

Desarmante e impressivo. Do Senegal, a Kora canta pop, a voz toca quente.

Devastations Coal
A pisar o território sempre perigoso da pop catastrofista. Na companhia de Cave. Distinto e elegante.

Richard Leo Johnson Legend of Vernon McAlister
Folk impressionista. Para lá de Fahey. É possível? É.

Gastr del sol Harp factory on lake street
Representante simultâneo da decadência e vividez de um certo post-rock. Album-jam dos notáveis de Chicago. Sente-se falta da costela pop. Mas a quem sabe dê-se-lhe o mérito.

Batagraf/Jon Balke Statements
Uma longa suite de colagens abstractas, jazz multiculturalista, arriscado – quase new age, centrado na percussão descompassada e suportes harmónicos electrónicos. Obtuso, vagamente trengo, proporcionalmente excitante.

01. Vetiver To find me gone, Fat Cat
Não tem só a ver com o disco. Tem também com o concerto deles na Zdb em Lisboa. Estava quase em cima do palco. Músicas e interpretações mágicas muito ao espírito dum néo-folk que me deixa cada vez a curtir o incenso em casa, a minha barba grande, a minha preocupação com o que como, com o que faço na vida. Gosto muito das botas de cowboys que estes gajos usam. Jeans Levi’s apertado. Faz-me pensar na vida. Há fotos deles em florestas, perto de árvores. Gosto disso.

02. Sun ok papi k.o. Oorchestre Philharmonok, Sonig
Não tem sobretudo a ver com o disco. Conheci-o pessoalmente em serralves quando veio dar um concerto - mau - com outro belga da sonig (Uské Orchestra). Mas já tinha dado dicas que o seu universo musical e estético me tocava particularmente: mandava-lhe músicas novas minhas de vez em quando na esperança de que me responderia, dizendo que gostava e que eu era um bacano. Disse-o sinceramente - acho... - em Serralves. Mas este primeiro encontro valeu sobretudo pelo afecto que tenho pela sua música e agora por ele (contactamo-nos regularmente) e também pela música que ele e o irmão (DJ Elephant Power) faziam em conjunto sob o nome Scratch Pet Land (editado na Sonig também). E cujo único álbum é para mim um dos discos fundadores da minha hipertensão arterial. Amo-o como amo o 3 Feet High dos De La Soul.

03. Project Bicycle, Ache records
Um projecto de músicas encomendadas a fulanos da electrónica lúdica (seja lá o que isso for) com base em samples de barulhos feitos a partir de uma bicicleta. A ideia é genial. O resultado é desigual. Mas há dois temas que partem a casinha toda. Um do DJ Elephant Power. Outro do Jason Forrest. O primeiro em contenção sublime. Fiquei surpreendido quando ouvi. Esperava aquela energia que ele deu no formato DJ Set + final scratch em serralves no Festival Trama, saiu uma coisa torta. O segundo, Jason Forrest no seu filha-da-puta melhor! O site do DJ elephant power é fanstático, tem vídeos caseiros dele onde o vemos a mixar e ele mixa como um eros. Depois o que me fascinou foi a ideia de fazer música lúdica com a ideia política sub-reptícia de nos fazer pensar em andar mais de bicicleta e menos de carro. Em Portugal, as únicas pessoas que andam de bicicleta têm uma esperança de vida nula. Em Lisboa, por favor, aplanem as putas das colinas, impludam telheiras, o Lumiar, Benfica, as laranjeiras, o Saldanha Residence, a parque Expo (impludam essa merda 34 vezes), o stand da Mercedes em sete rios, os smarts forfour, os smarts fortwo, os Porsche cayenne pretos, as carrinhas BMW 320 i, e, por favor, façam estradinhas em cimento rosa onde as bicicletas e os seus proprietários poderão andar e respirar ar.

04. Os CD-Rs, vinis e cassetes da malta que anda nas lides do DIY (Loosers, calhau!, CAVEIRA, etc). Há uma cena free que anda a por a cabeça de fora. Eu gosto e ando lá metido até aos ossos. O meu voto para 2007 é que façamos uma foto de conjunto - TODOS - junto a árvores no meio de uma floresta selvagem como os Vetiver. E que a seguir fossemos para casa de cada um, cada um no nosso carro.

05. O tema “Avril 14th” de Richard D James na compilação de músicas do filme
Marie Antoinette de Sofia Coppola. O tema não só é dum veludo simples e apaziguador (mas lixado de tocar, diz-me a Inês) como quem o compos foi o bastardo do Aphex Twin. I-NA-CRE-DI-TÁ-VEL! Dá vontade de voltar a ouvir tudo dele de novo sabendo que há ISTO em Aphex Twin.

06. O tema “Sister Winter” de Sufjan Stevens. Porque é mais um final de ano e todos os finais de ano são iguais. Um gajo olha para o que fez, quer por coisas a mexer e ama a vida. Palerma!

01. Will Oldham 'Bonnie Prince Billy' The Letting Go
One of my very favorite records. The words contemplating loneliness and longing, love, lust...some much beauty in his words lead me to contemplate all of this life. The song 'Strange Form of Life' is so beautiful it send chills down my spine. Will's vocal phrasing and the tone of his voice on this record is amazing, and Dawn McCarthy's creates perfect backing vocals that seem to soar through the air, adding an ethereal quality to the entire mix. This record is a masterpiece and timeless.

02. Chris Whitely Reiter In
Chris Whitely is one of my very favorite musicians. His words and music are raw and sensual! This was his very last recording made live with a band.

03. Josephine Foster A Wolf in Sheep's Cothing'
At the moment, I can't really put into words what I love about Josephine Foster. Her melodies, songs, her voice is so unique and her sound is like the oldest forms of Folk music. In my opinion she is one of the true genius folk musicians of our age.

04. Marissa Nadler Ivy and the Clovers (compilation tracks and misc oddities)
The story of Daisy and Violet is one of my favorite songs of the year. Marissa is brilliant at writing ballads that sound like they were written a hundred years ago. Her haunting, gorgeous vocals and meditative fingerpicking on her 12 string are very ethereal, timeless, and romantic.

05. James Blackshaw O True Believers
Listening to James play his 12 string leaves me with a similar feeling to when I'm listening to Marissa....his music creates grand spaces and meditation. I've just found out about his music, so I'm still learning about his voice on the guitar. So far, I think he's one of the strongest new voices on the guitar.

06. Sean Smith Sacred Crag Dancer Corpse Whisperer
At time Sean seems to tap into the ghost of John Fahey, but his guitar playing is far more than imitation. His sound is huge like a Cathedral. He seems to stretch out into improvisations that take you like a ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from America to the Old World...creating a swirling textures of sound you can live inside! Highly recommended for any fan of acoustic guitar music.

07. Leaves from the Trees (Sharron Kraus,Meg Baird, Helena Espvall) Leave from the Trees
I've just discovered this record and haven’t heard all of it yet, but I really love the sound of Sharron Kraus's vocals with Meg Bairds voice, and the Cello of Helena Espvall. It's really a gorgeous sound that has the feel of traditional music, but most definitely a unique sound that proves that some of the best folk music ever created is being made today.

08. Espers Espers II
"Mansfield and Cyclops" is another one of my favorite songs of the year. Meg Baird's absolutely beautiful vocals and cello of Helena Espvall swirl together, rise and fall like waves. The sound of the acoustic guitar and lanquid electric guitar parts, and electric bass are perfect together. Otto Hauser's drumming is the best on this song, creating textures and adding to the ambiance. Greg Week's did a brilliant job recording and mixing this song!

hypes ou anti-hypes. Veremos o que nos aguarda em 07.

Algumas observações pertinentes: Feu Thérèse é um novo projeto de Jonathan Parant, do ótimo projeto minimalista canadense Fly Pan Am. Amy Millan é vocalista dos canadenses Stars, que foram responsáveis por um dos melhores discos de 2005, Set yourself on fire. Perceba que o Canadá cada vez mais se consolida como uma potência musical contemporânea.

Existe uma certa noção de poder quando alguém nos pede para avançar com uma lista daqueles que foram para nós, os melhores álbuns de 2006. Pretensão estúpida. As acções da escrita e da publicação, não implicam necessariamente uma outra: a da leitura. Assim sendo, vou apresentar uma lista por acabar, uma relação livre e aberta a mudanças futuras.
Houve certamente bons discos que ainda não ouvi, outros que merecem mais audições e outros ainda que, pelo seu refinamento estético, podem estar a reter a minha atenção, transformando-a em cegueira perante outros títulos possivelmente mais válidos. Mas vou deixar tudo isso de parte. Vou concentrar-me naquilo que tenho entre mãos, deixando tudo o resto para outros que falarão delas com muito mais competência. Começo pelo princípio. Não quero aqui expectativas do tipo Miss Portugal ou Euro Festival da Canção (volta Eládio, os monstros precisam de amigos).

Desafiado pelo Bodyspace, escolhi estes 10 discos saídos em 2006 e que julgo serem merecedores de destaque. Muita coisa terá ficado por dizer até porque os meus hábitos musicais estão longe de ser os de um melómano dedicado. Muito provavelmente em 2007 descobrirei ainda mais discos fascinantes de 2006 mas por agora ficam estes. Não existe ordem aparente, apenas fui colocando os nomes à medida que me ia lembrando e achei que podia ser engraçado deixar ficar assim mesmo.
